Why the dial still matters

A tuning knob gives the hand something to do that a screen cannot. Notes on the Relay Field Radio.

A screen tells you the station. A dial lets you find it.

The first turn

On the Relay Field Radio the knob has the resistance of a receiver from another decade. You feel the station arrive before you hear it: a little drag, a little hiss, and then the voice. The display is one line of cyan digits and nothing else, because at four in the morning nothing else is needed.

What we left out

No app, no account, no firmware screen. Bluetooth is there for the hour when the station goes off air, and that is all it is there for.

The dial is not nostalgia. It is the shortest path between a hand and a sound.

Night

One desk, one light

The Redline lamp lights the page and stops at the edge of the desk. That is the whole idea.
