How to choose a running jacket for any weather
Wind, rain or a cold start: what to look for in a running jacket, and what you can skip.

In this article
A running jacket has one job: keep the weather out without cooking you from the inside. Most of the choices below come down to that balance.
Start with the weather you actually run in
Think about your usual run, not the worst storm of the year.
- Dry and windy: a light wind shell is enough. It packs into a pocket and blocks the chill.
- Showers: look for a water-resistant finish and taped shoulder seams.
- Steady rain: you need a fully waterproof jacket, and you will want it to breathe.
Breathability matters more than you think
When you run, you make a lot of heat. A jacket that keeps rain out but traps sweat leaves you just as wet. Look for vents under the arms or across the back, and a fabric that lets moisture escape.
A quick test in the store
Zip it up, raise your arms and twist. If it pulls across the shoulders or rides up at the waist, it will annoy you on every run.
Fit: room for one layer, no more
A running jacket should sit close without squeezing. Leave room for a long-sleeve top underneath on cold days, and check that the sleeves cover your wrists when your arms swing.
The best jacket is the one you forget you are wearing after the first kilometre.
Small details that make a big difference
- Reflective trims for early mornings and late evenings.
- A zipped pocket for keys and a phone.
- Thumb loops to keep the sleeves in place.
- A hood that moves with you when you turn your head.
Pick the two or three that matter for your runs and ignore the rest. Browse our women's jackets or men's jackets to compare.
